Kevin, Simon and David represent Striders veterans
Three members of Striders of Croydon competed in the Surrey Masters Cross-Country Championships at Richmond Park on Saturday. The club’s oldest competitor, Kevin Burnett, ran very well to place second in the over-75 race, covering the four-mile course in 45 minutes 21 seconds.
Simon Pannell also did well to place fifth in the over-50 race, covering the 10-kilometre course in 41 minutes 29 seconds. David Hoben was tenth in the over-60 race, covering the four-mile course in 35 minutes 35 seconds.
On the same day, Matt Morgan placed second in the Alice Holt parkrun, covering the five-kilometre course in 19 minutes 16 seconds. Becky Laurence was the second woman to finish the Riddlesdown parkrun, placing 36th overall in 23 minutes 40 seconds. Striders had a total of 51 finishers in the various local parkruns.
On the following day, Striders had 52 of the 457 finishers in the Croydon 10 kilometre road race. Their men were led by Bill Makuwa who placed seventh in 35 minutes 22 seconds, while Lee Flanagan was the first over-40 to finish, placing 14th overall in 37 minutes 43. Striders’ women were led by Karen Stretch who was the third woman to finish, placing 40th overall in a personal best 40 minutes 54. Alice Ewen was the eighth woman to finish, placing 83rd overall in 44 minutes 45.
